The Fishermen's Organization Rescuing Ensenada (OPRE) has made a major effort for the development of the rescue of the fishery at La Paz inlet.
Luis Felipe MéndezThe Bug; José Luis Alameda, Pablo Mendez, Jorge Armando OrdazEl Pollo"; Manuel Salvador MéndezChavalo" are some of the fishermen that make up the 109 cooperative fishing production societies that, through proper organization, have allowed the conservation of products such as callo de acha.
Its main objective is not only that the product does not become scarce again as it happened until 2011, leaving a large number of families that depend on this activity without a livelihood, but also that the cove produces a large amount of catarina and callo de acha.
"We thought, why don't we all get to work, there will be no more problems," commented "El Bicho".
In 2012, the fishermen met and organized until they reached an agreement not to fish in order to favor the development and growth of the product, thus achieving close to 60 thousand tripe. By 2015, the figure reached 3 million.
How did they achieve this?
This occurred due to the vigilance of the fishing community. Their organizational strategy consisted of working on conservation: one group planted, another monitored compliance with the no-fishing agreement, and still others harvested. The goal was clear: to reach 60 and 90 million tripe by 2022.
In addition, the fishermen suggested an adequate quota for all, consisting of 30 percent.
"It's about living and learning. My way of being has changed, I have felt it. There was a lot of callus that was taken out, that was found. That was the mistake. The callus started to run out. We don't want that to happen to us anymore. There will be a control," said one of the fishermen.
The fishermen agree on the need for support from investors and even from governments, in order to continue their work and increase profits.
"Also, if we are restoring the cove, we should also restore ourselves because we are relatives and we want to be well. That motivates us to move forward, and to send a message of how we are moving forward," says one fisherman.
