NOS Sustainable Northwest took advantage of the invitation from Ecology Project International (EPI Mexico) to participate in the My Sustainable Community Fairto offer to the young people a space to reflect on what they want for their communities.
Pastora Álvarez RamosThe coordinator of this civil association explained that NOS y EPI Mexico are organizations that collaborate in different activities and on this occasion they were invited to set up a stand at the fair so that they could show the work they carry out to promote activities aimed at achieving prosperous and resilient communities, with healthy ecosystems, to high school and middle school students.
"We asked them what was their vision for their community? They told us certain answers, such as picking up trash, that their parks are cleaner, for example, I had a girl from the community of Los Planes, a town very close to La Paz, and she told me that she would like to have more recreational and cultural activities in her community, and so many children participated in these questions," she said.
Having nicer and cleaner parks, more recreational activities, cleaner beaches, communities without garbage, taking care of the water, taking care of biodiversity were some of the answers left by the young people who answered the question at the NOS booth.
Sowing seeds in young people
Álvarez Ramos emphasized that the objective of the participation of Sustainable Northwest in the My Sustainable Community Fair was precisely to be a space that would invite young people to reflect and sow the seeds of what they can do to improve their communities.
"They left very reflective because it is what actions do you do in your community. Most of them were about garbage, as if there is a theme, as if they bring the issue of garbage very marked and they are left thinking, as if there is a lack of spaces for reflection on what they can do," he said.
The NOS coordinator told the young people about the example of El Manglitowhere community members have been working for more than a decade to restore the bay and recover marine resources.
"I told them that they are restoring the callo de hacha and I told them about a book that some young people from El Manglito have just published, and examples of things they can also do in their community," he said.
Pastora Alvarez invited the young people to reflect on what they want to achieve for their community, where they want to go, what they want to do and what activities they can carry out to make their vision a reality.
